Franz Josef Glacier may not been known for being an Island Destination, but the inaugural Island Theme Night at the Glacier Hot Pools changed all that.
The Glacier Hot Pools, located in the centre of Franz Josef Glacier township, was transformed into an Island paradise on Saturday 10 July with lei’s, island music, and decorations . Visitors and locals were asked to enter into an Island Themed Wearable Arts competition, held at the pools, using recycled or natural materials, with the “Catwalk” being the boardwalks between the Glacier Hot Pools themselves. The entries themselves surprised all with their quality and creativity. Billy Whiteman, one of the judges for the event, said “it was a fabulous night full of wonderment and surprises around every corner”. The overall winner went to Neil McKone in his “Catching the Big One” themed costume who took away a trophy sculpted from recycled material. Wayne Jones, Operations Manager at the Glacier Hot Pools, said “It was truly inspirational to be able to celebrate the creativity in Franz Josef”.
Mr Jones also added “It was a great night had by all, I can’t wait till the next one!”
The Glacier Hot Pools are fed with pure local glacier water and have three main pools and three bush-based private hot pools. They are enveloped in lush native vegetation, designed as a haven of natural tranquillity. The Glacier Hot Pools is located in the centre of Franz Josef township
