The water used in the Glacier Hot Pools comes from an onsite well drilled to a depth of 48Mtrs.
The well taps into the Wahio River Aquifer, who sources is the Franz Josef Glacier.
An aged anaylsis of the well water carried out by Institute of geological and Nuclear Sciences indicates that water has beeen in the aquifer in excess of 25yrs.
Chemical Make-up of the Water?
The Glacier water is described as a CaCo3 ( Alkaline ) water with a neutral Ph, making it a soft non acidic water.
Is the water treated?
Without some form of human intervention, water from the well would be unpleasant to bath in, therefore the water is treated, but only minimally. The water first passes through gauze strainers which remove large pieces of debris such as leaves and twigs. It then passes through exceptionally fine mutlimedia sand filters, to remove any smaller impurities.
Next the water is tested for Alkalinity and water purity, the former being controlled by the addition of Sodium Bicarbonate ( Baking Soda ). Other measures to maintain high quality included the addition of Chlorine at a ratio of 2.5parts per million, and recirculating the water every 2- 3 hours.
